Our mission statement
At Bowes we take pride in how we manage our livestock
Bowes adheres to the Five Freedoms
We apply the highest standards in livestock welfare with units being audited and monitored by Freedom Food and Assured British Pigs.
As members of Freedom Food, the units and transport are audited and monitored by the RSPCA, who also conduct regular spot checks. In addition we have quarterly audits carried out by our consultant veterinary team.
In line with Freedom Food standards, we actively apply the following Five Freedoms to our animal welfare pig production:
• Freedom from hunger and thirst
• Freedom from discomfort
• Freedom from pain, injury or disease
• Freedom to express normal behaviour
• Freedom from fear and distress
As standard practise, Bowes take the following steps to ensure our animals are looked after correctly with minimal impact on the environment and local community.
• All pigs are kept on straw.
• Feed is manufactured to our own formulations.
• No hormones are used.
• We operate waste management protocols to minimize the impact of our pig operations on the environment and local communities.
• All stock is traceable.
• Staff are trained in-house or via the East of England Pig Training Group.
